The Middleburg Memorial Committee convened at American Legion Post 295. The
meeting was attended by key members of Post 295, Royal British Legion, Allied Veterans
Heritage Foundation, and the Town of Middleburg. The committee discussed the status
and future plans for the Allied Veterans Heritage Foundation, with an emphasis on
creating an apolitical memorial that honors the Anglo-American relationship and other
allied forces. The committee explored the idea of establishing a 501(c)(3) non-profit for
grant and donation receipts and agreed to document the process through a book and TV
documentary to secure federal and state grants.
The composition of the committee was a significant topic, with discussions on the
inclusion of voting members and associate members to bring diverse skills and opinions.
The committee also touched on the legal status of the committee as an advisory board,
the creation of by-laws, and the formation of sub-committees for technical expertise
during the construction phase. It was decided that the memorial should focus on allies of
the United States during World Wars I and II, with a clear definition of “allies” to guide
future work.
The meeting concluded with closing comments from key participants, expressing
gratitude and outlining the strategic intent for the memorial, which will focus on
commemoration, education, and inspiration.
